Does Ceramic Coating Prevent Scratches?
No — not in the way the marketing implies. A ceramic coating adds a thin, hard sacrificial layer that resists very light marring and chemical etching, but it will not stop rock chips, key scratches, or the swirl marks created by an automatic wash or a dirty towel. If physical impact protection is the goal, paint protection film is the correct product.
What "9H" actually means
The 9H figure comes from a pencil hardness test, which measures resistance to a graphite pencil dragged across a surface. It is not the Mohs mineral scale, and it says nothing about impact resistance. Marketing borrowed the number because it sounds impressive.
A coating is typically two to three microns thick. Road debris does not care.
What a coating genuinely resists

A coated car washed in a tunnel will still develop swirl marks. The coating simply becomes the layer receiving them.
The practical benefit that gets overlooked
The real scratch-related advantage of a coating is indirect: because dirt releases more easily, you apply less pressure while washing, and less pressure means fewer swirl marks over years of ownership. The protection is behavioral as much as material.
